DAY 1 THURSDAY NOV 19 DEPART NEW YORK CITY to JOHANNESBURG via NAIROBI
Meet and greet at 11:45 AM at Terminal 4 at New York JFK Airport at the Nairobi Departure gate. Flight departs at 1:45 PM on Kenya Airways flight # KQ3 to Nairobi, Kenya, and arrives the next day at 10:45 AM.
DAY 2 FRIDAY NOV 20 WELCOME to JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA
Flight arrives at 10:45 AM in Nairobi, Kenya. 2 hr 20 mins layover. Flight departs at 12:35 PM on Kenya Airways flight # KQ762 to Johannesburg, South Africa and arrive at 3:30 PM. Proceed through Passport Control then proceed to exchange money and pickup luggage. We will then proceed to the lobby exit to meet our Tour Host & Driver for Airport pickup. Sightseeing tour and orientation on the way to the hotel for check-in. Dinner at 7PM and various nightlife options. DAY 3 SATURDAY NOV 21 JOHANNESBURG TOUR - LESEDI CULTURAL VILLAGE - CONSTITUTON HILL
9 AM departure for a 1 hour drive to experience Lesedi Cultural Village based in the Cradle of Humankind was created to showcase the diversity of African cultures, particularly of the dominant groups found in South Africa – the Zulu, the Xhosa, the Basotho, the Ndebele and the Pedi. Guests will be welcomed with traditional African singing before being escorted for a wander through the Ndebele-styled village and craft market. Guests will be orientated by watching a multi-visual theatre presentation on the history and origin of the South African people. Then guest will be taken on a tour of the five homesteads, each representing a particular culture’s choice of housing materials, decorative details and way of living.
Lunch then drive back to Johannesburg for full tour of Constitution Hill. This has been the site for South Africa’s Constitution Court since the mid-1990s but previously it was one of the country’s most notorious prisons. The Old Fort was built in 1892 and originally functioned as a prison and detention centre for those awaiting trial. The tour of the facility will take in the isolation cells known as Sections Four and Five where famous political activists such as Mahatma Ghandi, Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu were held, the Women’s Gaol that has housed Winnie Mandela and others and many other cells as well as the awaiting trial building. Prisoners at this facility have included British soldiers, traitors, hardened criminals, activists and many normal South Africans who contravened the harsh Apartheid laws. 7 PM Dinner and various night life options. DAY 4 SUNDAY NOV 22 - APARTHEID MUSEUM IN JOHANNESBURG - FULL TOUR OF SOWETO
8:30 AM departure for the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg which is architecturally interesting and packed with thoughtful, often brutal, reminders of South Africa’s history. Depart for SOWETO to have lunch, shopping and tour.
Mandela House in Orlando West, Soweto is a national monument dedicated to offering insights into the life of Nelson Mandela and the families that he lived with from 1946 through to the 1990s. Managed by the Soweto Heritage Trust, the house has been fully renovated and hosts a visitor centre as well as excellent multi-media and audio-visual displays outlining the history of the Mandela family. A meaningful experience, visitors are exposed to Mandela’s personal life on this visit.
Visit Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum. On the 16th of June 1976, Hector Peterson was shot by the police during a protest by school children about Afrikaans being imposed as the medium of instruction. The Soweto uprising, as it has come to be known, saw 20 children shot by police during what started out as a peaceful protest. One of the pivotal moments in the anti-Apartheid struggle, 12-year old Hector has come to symbolize those that stood against the tyrannical regime. Today, the 16th of June is celebrated in South Africa as National Youth Day in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the protest. The site where Hector was shot is not far from the memorial. DAY 5 MONDAY NOV 23 PILANESBERG NATIONAL PARK
6:30 AM departure for a 2 hour drive to Pilanesberg Game Reserve the ideal destination for a 3 hour safari, this is a reserve which boasts the big 5 Animals and other main species. Pilanesberg lies in the crater of an ancient volcano and has some unique scenery and geology. Pilanesberg National Park exists in a transition zone between the dryness of the Kalahari and the wet Lowveld vegetation. This rich transitional zone attracts an incredible variety of game animals, flora and fauna that are not often found living side by side. Virtually all of the animal species native to southern Africa can be found here, including the Big 5, wild dog, Roan, Tsessebe, Sable antelope and more than 360 species of bird. After Safari, we will break for Lunch in Pilanesburg. Depart back to Johannesburg in the afternoon. 7 PM Dinner and various night life options. 6:30 AM check out of hotel for flight to Cape Town. Flight departs Johannesburg, South Africa at 9:40 AM on FlySafair Flight # FA292 and Arrive at Cape Town International Airport at 12 Noon. Transfer to hotel for brief orientation and check in. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure in paradise. 7 PM dinner and various night life options. DAY 8 THURSDAY NOV 26 CAPE TOWN - ROBBEN ISLAND - TOWNSHIP TOUR
7:30 AM departure for half-day guided tour of Cape Town and Robben Island. Take the ferry from V&A Waterfront to UNESCO-listed Robben Island for a tour of the former prison for political prisoners. This is where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison. Lunch at waterfront then. Travel to nearby townships, including Langa and meet people in the community. 7 PM Dinner and various night life options. DAY 9 FRIDAY NOV 27 CAPE TABLE MOUNTAIN - TOWN CITY TOUR
8 AM departure for full-day guided tour including this superb view of Cape Town from the top of Table Mountain. Enjoy panoramic sights over the city from the top of Table Mountain. Visit The Bo-Kaap formerly known as the Malay Quarter and learn about the neighborhood’s history. Visit District Six Museum and learn about apartheid history. Visit the Castle of Good Hope. Tour the Cape Town Diamond Works and see South African jewelry at its finest. Sighhtseeing drive to Green Point Lighthouse in Mouille Point. 7 PM Dinner and various nightlife options.
